Is Google Cooking-up Something?

Google

Google

Google is notorious for waiting around while everyone else is proclaiming its fall, then standing up and kicking its rivals where it hurts most. Can’t think of any cases like that? Well, remember when Microsoft was investing in Facebook? Everyone was jabbering how M$ has “defeated” Google in the bid war and then Google announced OpenSocial… Or when Apple was (and still is to be fair) gaining ground in mobile market with the iPhone — Google announced Android OS.

However, that was before and the battles were not fought for Google’s core business — search and advertising revenue that it produces. It seems that recently though, everyone took turns in taking a swing at Google. Microsoft has announced bing search engine which has already managed to put a dent in Google’s search market share. Then M$ and Yahoo finally went through with so called “microhoo” deal, that failed first time around.

There’s also a rising buzz on the internet about conventional search dying and it all being about real-time search (Twitter search rings a bell?). Facebook even bought FriendFeed for that matter, mainstream opinion being that they are going after Twitter, something that they’ve done before.

Meanwhile, what has Google been up to? Not much really. To get back at Microsoft (?) they have announced Google Chrome OS that created quite some buzz and then went quiet. They have also added plenty of social features to their products — from Google Profiles to Google Reader. Google has also made their prototype search, codename “caffeine” open for public testing. However at this point none if it seems like an offensive move from Google — they are just shielding themselves one blow at a time.

The problem, is that Google’s left hand is not communicating very well to the right one. Even today they have some quite revolutionary products such as Google Voice (only available in the US), that has caused some Apple-directed hatred after the official GV app was rejected from AppStore. Other products such as Google Wave are already starting to bore people before they even came out. Meanwhile all of the little things mentioned above are just too scattered around and barely integrated at all.

So is Google indeed cooking-up something HUGE? Or has it become a dinosaur that Microsoft once was and from now on it will just be rolling downhill? Hopefully not…

  • [...] different function to Symbian, and is far more geared to open internet devices (like Google’s Chrome OS), it does also need to attract conventional operator interest in the early stages to gain traction [...]

  • Great article. There’s a lot of good information here, though I did want to let you know something – I am running Ubuntu with the current beta of Firefox, and the look and feel of your blog is kind of bizarre for me. I can understand the articles, but the navigation doesn’t function so good.

  • AN Athar

Noted :) will work on that.

  • This can be a very good browse on behalf of me, Must admit that you are one among the best bloggers I ever saw. Thanks for posting this informative article.

  • Thank you for the wonderful article. I will follow you via RSS.

  • It is much easier to post about matters that went well, or seemed great on the outside. When we flipped to Extreme Programming a few ages past, we made outstanding mistakes taking for granted that automated testing was enough, and shipped many terrible releases. We learned to a greater extent about testing (and how to better it) from those woefulputrid releases than from the succeeding solid releases.

  • I am not new to blogging and really value your blog. There is much prime subject that peaks my interest. I am going to bookmark your internet site and keep checking you out.
